Taking Trees Down Without Hitting the House

Tree removal on a Huntsville lot usually means taking a tree apart from the top down, not felling it in one piece. Most yards here have a roof, a carport, a privacy fence or a neighbor's shed within reach of a mature oak or pine, so limbs come off first and the trunk follows in sections, with heavy pieces lowered on ropes. How long that takes depends on more than height: the slope of the yard, the gate width, how much is underneath, and whether the wood is still sound all change the plan and the price.

Trees that should come out

Some are obvious: a dead tree, a pine that has turned brown from bark beetles, a trunk with a long open crack, a large cavity or mushrooms at the base, or a tree that has started leaning since the last storm with soil heaved up on one side. Others are a judgment call, such as a healthy water oak that has outgrown a small lot, a sweetgum dropping spiky balls on the driveway, or a tree whose roots are lifting a slab. We tell you what we see, including when pruning could solve the problem instead of removal.

Why dead trees are harder

A tree that has been dead for a year or two in Alabama's heat and humidity loses strength quickly. Pines in particular become brittle and can shed tops and limbs without warning. That makes climbing and rigging slower and less predictable, and some dead trees are better taken down from a lift than by a climber. If a tree is dying, removing it while the wood is still sound is usually simpler and safer than waiting.

Slopes, rock and tight access

Huntsville neighborhoods on Monte Sano, Huntsville Mountain and in Jones Valley often have steep or terraced yards. Where a truck cannot set up, a climber works with ropes and the wood is carried or winched out. In older subdivisions, back yards are often fenced with narrow gates, so equipment size matters. On clay soil after a rainy week, we may suggest waiting a few days so equipment does not rut the lawn.

Near wires and the street

We do not cut near energized power lines; the utility handles those, and we take down the rest of the tree once the line is clear. If a tree stands on public right-of-way, the City of Huntsville's Urban Forestry and Horticulture division manages it, so check with the city before any work. We flag both situations at the estimate.

What happens to the wood

Because the city will not pick up debris from a contractor's work, every removal quote says exactly what happens to the brush, logs and chips. You can keep logs in rounds for firewood, keep a pile of chips for your beds, or have it all hauled. The stump is a separate line so you can decide whether to grind it now or later.

What Is Included

Removal covers the tree itself and everything that comes off it.

Sectional removal

Dead and beetle-killed trees

Dead pines and hardwoods taken down before they grow more brittle and start dropping tops.

Large trees near structures

Brush chipping and log haul-off

Branches chipped on site and logs left, cut to firewood length or hauled away.

Tree Removal Questions

How much does tree removal cost in Huntsville?

HomeGuide's 2026 national figures put most removals between about $400 and $1,200, from around $200 for a small, easy tree to $2,500 or more for a very large one. Pines run about $250 to $1,600 and oaks about $300 to $2,500. Access, slope and what the tree could hit change the price most, so we give a written figure after seeing it.

Do I need a permit to remove a tree in Huntsville?

Trees on public right-of-way are managed by the city's Urban Forestry and Horticulture division under the city tree ordinance, so ask the city before any work on them. For trees in a local historic district, a call to the Historic Preservation Office is a good idea. We point out either situation during the estimate.

Can you take down a tree in a fenced back yard?

Usually, yes. Most back-yard removals are done by a climber with ropes, and the wood is carried or wheeled out through the gate. If the gate is very narrow, we may need a fence panel removed; we tell you that before the job, not during it.

Is a dead tree more expensive to remove?

Often. Dead wood breaks unpredictably, so climbing and rigging take longer, and some dead trees need a lift rather than a climber. Removing a declining tree before it dies is usually cheaper and safer.

Will you leave the firewood?

If you want it. We can leave logs in rounds or cut to firewood length and stacked where you choose, or haul everything away. Pine is not a great fireplace wood, so many people keep the hardwood and let us haul the pine.
