Mountaintop Tree Work
Grant is a town on the plateau of Gunters Mountain in Marshall County, about 30 miles southeast of Huntsville, and tree service in Grant is shaped by the mountain. Lots up top are exposed to wind, the bluffs are steep and rocky, and the roads that run down toward Guntersville Lake are narrow and winding. Pro Tree Service Huntsville makes the trip for jobs on the mountain and along its edges.
A town named for a general
Grant was settled in the late 1830s and got a post office in 1887. It is named for Ulysses S. Grant; many residents supported the Union during the Civil War. The town incorporated on November 15, 1945. In 1924, the Daughters of the American Revolution founded the Kate Duncan Smith DAR School here, which is on the National Register and is the only K-12 school the DAR owns and operates. The town had 1,039 residents in 2020, up from 896 in 2010.
Life on the plateau
Grant sits at roughly 1,250 to 1,300 feet, far above the valley towns. On top of the mountain:
- Wind hits harder than in sheltered valleys, especially during spring and fall storm systems
- Soil is often thin over rock, so roots spread wide and shallow
- Ice storms can be worse at elevation, loading limbs with more weight
- Lone trees in open yards take the full force of storms
Regular deadwood removal and reducing heavy limbs over roofs make a real difference here.
Down toward the lake
The town's corridors run south across the mountain to the shore of Guntersville Lake and east along Baker Mountain Road. Lakeside and bluff lots are steep, and trees there often lean out toward the water and the light. Removing those trees usually means climbing and lowering wood in sections, since there is rarely room to fell them and equipment access is limited.
Near Cathedral Caverns
Cathedral Caverns, a historic cave, lies about five miles north of town near Kennamer Cove. The caves are a reminder of the limestone that underlies the valleys around the mountain. Karst ground in those valleys can have sinkholes and uneven soil, which affects where heavy equipment can safely go.
How we handle Grant jobs
Because of the distance, we try to group jobs on the mountain on the same day. When you call, tell us about access: road grade, driveway width, overhead lines and any slope. Photos help us plan.
Mountain lots and wildfire season
Dry spells, usually late summer and fall, leave the woods around mountaintop homes full of dry fuel. Clearing dead trees and low limbs near the house, and keeping branches off the roof, reduces fire risk as well as storm damage.

Grant Questions
Do you really come out as far as Grant?
Yes. Grant is about 30 miles from Huntsville, and we schedule mountain jobs together when we can. Call (938) 666-8748 with the details.
Why do trees on Gunters Mountain break so often in storms?
Exposure and soil. Mountaintop trees face more wind and often grow in thin soil over rock, so they have less anchorage. Ice at elevation can also load limbs heavily.
Can you remove a tree on a steep lakeside lot?
Yes. On steep lots we usually climb and lower the wood in sections, then move it up to where it can be chipped or hauled.
Can you clear dead trees and brush around my house on the mountain?
Yes. We remove dead trees and low limbs near the house and chip or haul the brush.
Can you prune trees for a lake view without hurting them?
Often, yes. Selective thinning and raising lower limbs can open a view while keeping the tree healthy. Topping is not a good option.
