Why So Many Bradford Pears Are Coming Out

Bradford pear removal has become a regular job in Huntsville because so many of these trees were planted in front yards and subdivision entrances, and so many are now reaching the age where they fail. The Bradford is a cultivar of the Callery pear. It grows fast into a neat teardrop shape with bright white spring flowers, but its branches grow upward from the trunk at tight angles, crowded close together, and those narrow forks are weak. The trees typically live less than 25 years, and storms regularly split or kill them.

How Bradford pears fail

A mature Bradford often splits right down the middle, with one half of the crown peeling away from the other along a fork full of included bark. It often happens in spring, when the tree is heavy with leaves and flowers and thunderstorms roll through, or under wet snow. A split pear rarely recovers in a way that is worth keeping: the wound is large, the remaining half is lopsided, and the next storm usually finishes the job.

Signs a pear is close to failing

Look for cracks running down from a fork, a seam of dark, wet-looking bark between two stems, one side of the crown sagging, or old broken stubs from earlier storms. A pear that is 15 to 20 years old with a dense crown over a driveway, sidewalk or roof is a good candidate for removal even if it has not cracked yet.

The invasive side

Bradford pears were sold as seedless, but they cross-pollinate with other Callery pear cultivars and produce small fruit that birds spread. The seedlings come up as thorny thickets along roadsides, fence lines and old fields across the Southeast and the eastern US, where they crowd out native plants. South Carolina banned the sale and planting of Callery pear in 2024. Clearing seedlings from a fence row or back lot is part of this job if you want it.

The smell

Many people simply want them gone because of the flowers. Bradford blossoms have a strong odor often compared to rotting fish, and for a couple of weeks each spring the smell is hard to miss.

What to plant instead

If you want a flowering tree in the same spot, native options such as redbud, serviceberry or flowering dogwood bloom in spring without the weak structure. For shade, a red maple or one of the native oaks in a spot with enough room will outlast a pear many times over. We can talk through where a new tree would fit once the old one and its stump are gone.

Bradford Pear Removal Questions

How much does Bradford pear removal cost?

Most yard Bradford pears stand under 50 feet. HomeGuide's 2026 national figures put removal of trees under 30 feet at about $200 to $500 and trees 30 to 60 feet at about $500 to $1,500, with stump grinding extra. We give a written price after seeing the tree.

Can a split Bradford pear be saved?

Rarely in a way worth keeping. The wound is large and the remaining half is usually unbalanced and prone to the next split. Removal is usually the practical choice.

Can pruning stop a Bradford pear from splitting?

Thinning a young pear and removing competing stems early can help, but on mature trees the weak forks are already formed. Pruning may reduce weight for a while; it does not fix the structure.

Will the stump sprout?

Callery pear stumps can sprout. Grinding the stump below grade and clipping any shoots that appear usually ends it.

Is a Bradford pear the same as a Callery pear?

Bradford is one cultivar of the Callery pear. Other cultivars such as Cleveland Select and Aristocrat look similar; they cross-pollinate with each other, which is how the thorny wild seedlings spread.
