Tree Care Between Madison and Harvest

Monrovia is an unincorporated community in western Madison County, bounded by Madison to the south, Huntsville to the southeast, Harvest to the north and Limestone County to the west. Tree service in Monrovia mostly involves homes built over the last few decades on land that was cotton country within living memory. Pro Tree Service Huntsville works across the area, from the newer subdivisions to older homesites along the county roads.

Gin country

The area has gone by Vaughn Corners and Thompson Mill as well as Monrovia, the name used by a post office from 1878 to 1904. Jeff Gin, at Jeff Road and Nick Davis Road, began in 1956 as Douglass Brothers and was one of 26 cotton gins in Madison County at the time; by 1972 it had become the Jeff Gin Company co-op. The schools now serving the area, from Monrovia Elementary and Middle to Sparkman High, show how much of that farmland has become neighborhoods.

Open land, planted trees

Former cotton ground was mostly treeless. The shade trees in Monrovia yards were planted by builders and owners, which has a few consequences:

1. Same age, same species. A whole street of trees planted together tends to reach problem size at the same time, and a pest or disease that favors one species can hit every yard. 2. No wind shelter. With no woods around them, yard trees catch full wind. Strong structure matters more here than in a wooded neighborhood. 3. Compacted soil. Construction packs clay soil hard, which keeps roots shallow. Shallow roots mean more surface roots in the lawn and more trees that tip in saturated ground.

Storm exposure

Monrovia's neighbors have a hard storm history. Harvest, just north, was hit by tornadoes in 1974, 1995, 2011 and 2012. Regular deadwood removal and good structure do not stop a tornado, but they reduce how many limbs come down in the ordinary severe thunderstorms that pass through every spring.

Utilities

Water and sewer here come from the Harvest-Monrovia Water and Sewer Authority. Before any stump grinding, we have buried lines marked through Alabama 811. If a tree touches an overhead electric line, the electric provider listed on your bill handles the line side; do not try to trim near it yourself.

Fences, sheds and play sets

On suburban lots, the most common reason people call us is a tree that has outgrown its spot next to something: a privacy fence, a shed, a play set, a pool. Limbs scrape, roots lift footings, and leaves fill gutters and water. Many of those trees can stay with good pruning; others are better removed and replaced with something smaller in a better location. We give you both options and the price of each in writing.

Monrovia Questions

All the trees on our street were planted at once. Should we worry?

It is worth having them checked together. Same-age, same-species plantings tend to develop the same structural issues at the same time. Pruning them while they are young prevents most of it.

Roots are coming up all over my lawn. Can you cut them?

Cutting large surface roots can destabilize a tree or invite decay, so it is rarely the first answer. Mulch or a soil top-dressing is often better. If roots are lifting a drive or walk, we can look at options, including removal.

Does Madison County require a permit to remove a tree on my own lot?

Ask the county if you are unsure, and read your HOA covenants, which often have their own rules about removing or replacing yard trees. If a tree is in a road right-of-way, the county or state road department should be contacted first.

Can you prune a tree back from my fence without killing it?

Usually. We cut back to healthy side branches instead of stubbing limbs, which keeps the tree healthy while clearing the fence.
