An 1859 Railroad Stop, Still Rural

Elkmont is a small town several miles north of Athens and a few miles south of the Tennessee line, with the Elk River just to the west. Tree service in Elkmont is mostly country work: large trees on homesites, wooded edges and the occasional big cleanup after a storm. Pro Tree Service Huntsville serves Elkmont and the surrounding part of northern Limestone County.

From Fort Hampton to Elkmont

The settlement began in 1859 as a stop called Fort Hampton on the new Tennessee and Alabama Central Railroad. It was renamed Elkmont in 1866, after the elk that once lived in the area, and incorporated on March 28, 1873. The L&N Railroad absorbed the line and built the current depot in 1887; it now serves as a community center. In September 1864 the Battle of Sulphur Creek Trestle was fought just south of town, and the site is on the National Register. The town has about 411 residents.

The Richard Martin Trail

The old rail line through town is now the Richard Martin Trail, with the tracks removed. Rail-trails are lined with trees on both sides, and many back yards in Elkmont border it. If a tree on your property leans over the trail, keep in mind that people walk and ride under it. Dead limbs and leaning trees near a public path are worth taking care of before they fall. Trees on trail property itself are managed by whoever owns the trail, so contact them about those.

Near the Elk River

The Elk River runs to the west of town. Properties closer to the river have deeper, wetter soil and fast-growing bottomland trees, while higher ground around town (about 850 feet) has more oaks, hickories and cedars. Wet ground in late winter and spring can make access slow, so we plan jobs around the weather where we can.

What a typical job looks like

  • Walkthrough. We look at each tree with you and talk about what you want: removal, pruning, or just a check.
  • Written estimate. Each task is listed, along with cleanup and what happens to the wood.
  • The work. Trees are pruned or removed, with wood lowered on ropes near structures.
  • Cleanup. Brush is chipped, and logs are hauled or cut to firewood length as agreed.
  • Stumps. Ground below grade if that is part of the job, after buried lines are marked through Alabama 811.

Older trees in town

In Elkmont's small town center, some yards have trees that date from when the railroad still ran. Those mature trees add shade and character but often carry deadwood and old wounds. Periodic deadwood removal and light clearance pruning keep them going and protect roofs and lines. Big cuts are seldom needed.

Elkmont Questions

A tree in my yard leans over the Richard Martin Trail. Should I do something?

If it has dead limbs or a noticeable lean, it is worth having checked, since people pass underneath. We can prune or remove trees on your property. Trees on the trail itself are the trail owner's responsibility.

How far out from Athens do you go?

We cover all of northern Limestone County, including Elkmont and Ardmore.

Can you leave the logs for firewood?

Yes. Tell us the length you want and where to put it, and we will note it on the estimate.

Do older trees need a lot of pruning?

Usually not. Removing deadwood and keeping clearance over roofs and lines every few years is enough for most mature trees.

Can stumps be ground close to a well or septic field?

Usually, with care. Tell us where the well head, lines and drain field are before the visit, and have public utilities marked through Alabama 811.
