Tree Service on the Tennessee River
Decatur is the Morgan County seat, on the south bank of the Tennessee River southwest of Huntsville. Tree service in Decatur means everything from big old shade trees on narrow lots in Old Decatur and Albany to newer subdivisions out toward Flint Creek and the refuge. Pro Tree Service Huntsville works across the city.
Know the city's limb rules before the job
Decatur's Solid Waste Department collects limbs shorter than 12 feet and less than 12 inches in diameter, picked up by loader truck from the same spot as your cart. Pickup is not on a fixed schedule and can take about two weeks, longer after storms. Two rules matter most when you hire anyone:
- Contractors must haul their own debris. The city will not collect limbs and logs left from a contractor's work.
- Placement matters. Keep piles away from fences, mailboxes, buildings and utility poles, behind the curb, and never on top of a leaf pile in leaf season.
Our estimates state whether we haul everything, leave firewood, or leave small brush you plan to set out yourself.
Old neighborhoods
Union forces ordered almost every building in Decatur destroyed during the Civil War; only a handful survive, including the Old State Bank. Albany grew up separately as New Decatur, founded in 1887 and merged with Decatur in 1925. Both neighborhoods have mature street and yard trees, alleys in places and tight side yards. Delano Park, founded in 1887, is the oldest city park in Morgan County still in continuous use. Trees on these lots are usually old, large and close to houses, so careful rigging and sectional removal are common.
River weather
Wheeler Lake on the Tennessee River sets the tone. The northern part of the city sits on a hill that drops steeply to the river at Rhodes Ferry Park, and trees on that slope and along the bluffs face more wind than those inland. Severe storms peak in spring with a second peak in November, and remnants of tropical systems can bring wind and heavy rain between July and October. The January 2011 storm brought up to 8 inches of snow. Wet, heavy snow on magnolias and other broadleaf evergreens is a frequent cause of broken limbs.
Utility lines
City garbage fees are billed on the Decatur Utilities bill. If a tree is touching a power line, call the electric provider on your bill before anyone works on it. We can take care of the parts of the tree that are clear of the line once it is safe.
Magnolias and other big evergreens
Old Decatur yards often have southern magnolias, hollies and other broadleaf evergreens that keep their leaves all winter. They catch snow and ice that deciduous trees shed, which is why they break in winter storms. Thinning and shortening long limbs helps.

Decatur Rules and Background
- Limb size limits. Decatur collects limbs less than 12 feet long and less than 12 inches in diameter by loader truck; pickup is unscheduled, may take about two weeks and can be delayed by storm debris.
- Contractor debris. The city's Solid Waste Department will not haul debris from a contractor's work; contractors must remove their own.
- Old neighborhoods. Albany was founded as New Decatur in 1887 and merged with Decatur in 1925; Delano Park, founded in 1887, is the oldest continuously operating city park in Morgan County.
- Storm seasons. Severe storms peak in spring with a second peak in November, and tropical disturbances can bring strong winds and heavy rain from July to October.

Decatur Questions
Can I leave the brush from my tree job for the city to pick up?
Not if a contractor did the work. Decatur requires contractors to haul their own debris. If you trim small limbs yourself, keep them under 12 feet long and 12 inches thick and set them behind the curb.
How long does Decatur's loader truck take after a storm?
The city says pickup can take about two weeks normally and may be delayed by storm debris. If you need the yard cleared sooner, have the hauling included in your tree work estimate.
Do you work in Priceville and Trinity too?
Yes. We cover Decatur and nearby Priceville, Trinity and Lacey's Spring.
Can a big magnolia be pruned without ruining it?
Yes. Selective thinning and shortening of the heaviest limbs keeps its shape and reduces breakage. Avoid shearing or topping.
